In 2009, the North-American technology giant Amazon launched a powerful interactive application called Amazon Mechanical Turks. This platform allows companies to post questionnaires online, known as human intelligence tasks (HITs). The users can choose if, when and to what extent they answer them, thus helping the companies to map consumer behavior and desires efficiently, quickly and economically.
Payment for completing the tasks is made in virtual currency, which can be used to purchase products on Amazon.com at special rates.
Here, I propose to pay the users to spend ten minutes without answering a single questionnaire and to put their free time to some other use, doing anything or nothing at all. The paradox is that the user must prove this downtime by sending in webcam footage of whatever they chose to do with it.
According to Amazon rules, the users are not allowed to give answers that may reveal their identity. Therefore, each user has its own numerical identification.
The Amazon Company has threatens the artist with legal action for violating their codes of conduct and terms of privacy.
